Disney’s animated movie, The Little Mermaid was first shown in 1989 and was based on Hans Christian Andersen’s story of the same name. However, in the movie adaptation, The Little Mermaid was given a totally different personality as well as her physical appearance. In the movie she has distinctive long, flowing red hair and blue eyes and wears a purple seashell bikini top and has a green tail. In fact, there was quite a lot of dispute about the color of Ariel’s hair; the original animator basing the color on his own wife’s hair. However, the studio executives wanted her to have blonde hair.

In 1991 there was a prequel television series and in 2000 there was a direct to video sequel called The Little Mermaid II: Return to the Sea. In 2008 another prequel set a few years before the events of the film was released called The Little Mermaid: Ariel’s Beginning. In Copenhagen there is a beautiful statue of a mermaid inspired by Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tail. It was sculpted by Edward Eriksen and was presented to the City in 1913.

Mermaids are mythological creatures that are depicted in folklore, literature and popular culture having a female human head and torso with a fish tail. Stories first emerged in Assyria around 1000BC about a goddess who loved a mortal shepherd but unfortunately killed him. Full of guilt and shame she jumped into a lake to take the form of a fish, but the water did not conceal her beauty. She then took the form of a mermaid.

There are some great mermaid paintings. The most beautiful could well be J.W. Waterhouse’s, A Mermaid created in 1900. John William Waterhouse was a British pre-Raphaelite painter who is best known for his painting of female characters from Greek and Arthurian legend.

There are also some fun mermaid movies, one of the better ones being Splash which starred Tom Hanks alongside Daryl Hannah as the mermaid. This 1984 romantic comedy was directed by Rob Howard and was nominated for an Academy Award for the best original screenplay.

Even Doris Day donned a mermaid outfit in the movie, The Glass Bottom Boat. Her character occasionally helped out her father by donning a mermaid costume and swimming underneath his boat to amuse the passengers.
